What to do while you wait
Water leak
Turn off the main water tap, usually at the meter near the front boundary. In units, look in the laundry, bathroom or kitchen cupboard.
Smell of gas
Don’t use switches or phones near the smell. Turn off the gas at the meter if it’s safe, open doors and windows, and leave. Call Jemena on 131 909, then call us.
Overflowing toilet
Turn off the small tap behind the toilet, and stop flushing or running water in the house.
Water near power
If water is near power points or lights, switch off at the switchboard and keep clear.
Find your water shut-off before you need it. Most houses have a stop tap beside the water meter near the front boundary; turn it clockwise to shut off the whole property. Read what to do if your main tap won’t turn off.

How much does an emergency plumber cost?
After hours (4pm to 7pm) the call-out is $149 with a minimum of 2 hours labour at $247.50 an hour. Emergencies from 7pm to 6am are a $249 call-out with a minimum of 3 hours at $330 an hour. Weekends are a $125 call-out and $330 an hour. Prices include GST, and you get the price before we start.
What should I do before the plumber arrives?
Turn off the main water tap at the meter for a burst pipe, turn off the gas at the meter if you smell gas and it’s safe, and switch off power at the switchboard if water is near electrics.
Do you come out on weekends and public holidays?
Yes. We answer the phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including weekends and public holidays. If we miss your call, we call you back as soon as we’re off the tools.
What should I do if I smell gas?
Avoid anything that could spark, turn off the gas at the meter if it’s safe, open doors and windows and get everyone outside. Call the Jemena gas emergency line on 131 909, then call a licensed gas fitter such as GT Plumbing on 0451 001 503.
