Is it a blocked drain?

Signs you need us

  • Water draining slowly from sinks, showers or the bath
  • Gurgling from the plughole or toilet
  • Toilet water rising when you flush
  • Sewer smells inside or around the house
  • An overflowing gully trap or wet patches in the yard
  • The same drain blocking more than once a year

When you may not need us

  • Only one sink or basin is slow? Try a plunger first. It may save you a call-out.
  • The blockage is in the Sydney Water main? We’ll show you on camera, and Sydney Water fixes its own pipes.
  • The pipe has collapsed? Clearing alone won’t last. We’ll show you the footage and talk through repair or relining.

If water is coming up from the gully or several fixtures back up at once, the blockage is usually in the main sewer line. Stop using water in the house and call us straight away.

The right tool for your pipe

We start with the simplest method that will work, and only step up if the blockage needs it.

Drain eel for small pipes

For 50mm pipes: sinks, basins and showers. Quick, clean and usually all a hair or soap blockage needs.

High-pressure jetter for sewers

For 100mm sewer and stormwater lines. Alex runs specialist nozzles, including the USB Gator, Direct Hit, Double Barrel Mustang and Root Ranger, to scour the pipe back to full size. More on drain jetting.

CCTV camera to find the cause

A camera down the line shows exactly what caused the blockage, and you keep the footage. More on CCTV drain inspections.

If the pipe is cracked or broken, we explain your options in plain English, from a spot repair to pipe relining. We do relining ourselves, so there’s no subcontractor in the middle.

How we clear a blocked drain

  1. Find the blockageWe check the gully, inspection points and fixtures to work out where the problem is.
  2. Price firstYou get the price before any work starts, and nothing extra is done without your OK.
  3. Clear itPlunger or air pressure, a drain eel for small pipes, or the high-pressure jetter for sewer and stormwater lines.
  4. Camera checkIf it keeps coming back, our CCTV camera shows exactly what’s causing it. You keep the footage.
  5. Straight adviceIf the pipe is cracked or full of roots, we tell you honestly what it needs, and what it doesn’t.

Why drains block in older Sydney homes

The fix is different for each cause, which is why we find the cause before we start clearing.

Clay pipes and tree roots

Many homes around Ryde, Eastwood and Epping still have their original terracotta sewer pipes. The joints shift and crack, and roots get in looking for water. More on tree roots in drains.

Fat, wipes and build-up

In newer homes and units it’s more often kitchen grease, so-called flushable wipes, or hair and soap in the shower waste.

Stormwater after heavy rain

Leaves and silt fill pits and stormwater lines, and water backs up against the house. We clear the line and check it on camera.

Honest second opinions save you money

Told your pipe has collapsed?

Some customers call us after another plumber has told them their pipe has collapsed, is in critical condition, or can’t be fixed without a big dig.

We put our own camera down the line and show you the footage. More than once, the pipe wasn’t collapsed at all, and a much smaller job fixed the problem. We’d rather tell you the truth and keep you as a customer for life.

★★★★★

“A previous plumber had told us that the blockage could not be resolved and had quoted an exorbitant amount for the proposed work. Alex was able to successfully diagnose and clear the blocked sewer himself, resolving the problem when we had been told it couldn’t be done. Alex potentially saved us $15,000–$20,000, with a great outcome with Sydney Water.”

“I had a blocked drain in Epping and called a few plumbers. Some quoted me $1600… He came out, unblocked it, and was about $1000 cheaper than what I was quoted for an emergency call out… This guy won’t rip you off, his reviews are genuine.”

Stop it coming back

  • Wipes go in the bin, even ones labelled flushable. They don’t break down like toilet paper.
  • Let cooking fat cool and put it in the bin, not down the sink.
  • Keep the gully grate clear of leaves and dirt.
  • Blocking more than once a year? Get it checked with a camera. Repeat blockages usually mean roots or a damaged pipe.
  • Strata or rental? We send photos and a written report to your strata manager or property manager.

Blocked drain questions

How much does it cost to clear a blocked drain?

Our business-hours call-out is $99 in our listed service areas ($125 elsewhere), including fuel and the first 15 minutes of inspection (no digging). Clearing is $220 an hour with a plunger or air pressure, $180 an hour with a drain eel, $385 an hour with a hydro jetter, or $539 an hour for jetting with a CCTV camera. Prices include GST, and you get the price before we start.

Can I use drain cleaner from the supermarket?

For a slow basin it can help, but chemical cleaners won’t shift tree roots or a broken pipe, and they can damage older pipes. If the drain keeps blocking, it needs a proper look.

Why does my drain keep blocking?

Repeat blockages usually mean tree roots have got into a cracked joint or the pipe has sagged. A CCTV inspection shows where and why, so it can be fixed once.

Who is responsible for a blocked sewer, me or Sydney Water?

Generally the pipes on your property, up to the connection with the Sydney Water main, are the owner’s responsibility. We can show you where the blockage is on camera before you pay for any repair.

How long does it take to clear a blocked drain?

Many household blockages are cleared in a single visit. Tree roots or a broken pipe can take longer, and if that’s the case we show you on camera and give you the price before going any further.

Are flushable wipes safe to flush?

No. Wipes don’t break down like toilet paper, and they’re one of the most common causes of blocked toilets and sewer lines. Put them in the bin.

Do you come out after hours?

Yes. We answer 24/7, including weekends and public holidays. After-hours and emergency rates are listed in our price table.
