Toilet problems we fix

Inside the toilet

  • Running toilets: worn inlet valves, flush valves and seals
  • Weak or half flushes: buttons, cables and mechanisms
  • Leaks at the base, cistern, water connection or pan connector
  • Wobbly toilets: re-seating and re-sealing the pan
  • Cracked pans and cisterns: new toilets supplied and installed

When the blockage isn’t in the toilet

If plunging doesn’t help, or it blocks again a few days later, the problem is often further down the line. In older homes around Ryde, Eastwood and Epping, tree roots in clay sewer pipes are a common cause.

If your shower, sink or the gully outside is also slow, gurgling or overflowing, that’s another sign. See blocked drains.

Why a running toilet is worth fixing

A toilet that trickles into the bowl wastes water around the clock, and most people only notice when the bill arrives. In units and rentals, a slow leak at the base can soak into the floor and the ceiling below.

“Had a plumbing emergency regarding a blocked toilet in a rental property. Tried to get hold of the real estate but as usual on a weekend no where to be found. I gave GT Plumbing a buzz and genuinely was impressed with the customer service provided.”

“He replaced my tap and repaired the toilet cistern, and he also helped me with the main isolation valve for the unit. The work was completed efficiently and everything was explained clearly.”

“We live in Gladesville and we called a few plumbers, unfortunately they were either too expensive or not available… He even showed us he had cleared the whole drain 100%. Our family has found a new plumber.”

Quick checks before you call

  • Overflowing? Turn off the small tap on the water pipe behind or beside the toilet.
  • Stop flushing. Each flush adds more water to a blocked bowl.
  • Other fixtures backing up too? The blockage is probably in the main sewer line, so avoid using water until it’s cleared.
  • Skip the drain chemicals. They rarely clear a real blockage and can be dangerous for whoever has to fix it.

Toilet repair questions

How much does it cost to fix a toilet?

A new inlet valve is $180 (bottom inlet) or $185 (side inlet), supplied and installed. Other repairs are $165 an hour in business hours. A call-out of $99 in our listed service areas ($125 elsewhere) applies. Prices include GST, and you get the price before we start.

Why does my toilet keep running?

Usually it’s a worn inlet valve or a perished flush valve seal inside the cistern, which lets water trickle into the bowl. It’s normally a quick repair.

Can you fix a blocked toilet after hours?

Yes. We answer the phone 24/7, including weekends and public holidays. If we miss your call, we call you back as soon as we’re off the tools.

Should I repair or replace my toilet?

If the pan and cistern are in good condition, a repair is usually the better value. If the pan is cracked, cistern parts are no longer available, or it keeps giving trouble, replacing it often makes more sense. We’ll tell you honestly which way we’d go.

Do you install new toilets?

Yes. We install new toilet suites, including back-to-wall and wall-hung styles, whether we supply the toilet or you’ve already chosen one.
