Repair or replace?

Signs your system needs attention

  • No hot water, or it runs out faster than it used to
  • Water leaking from the tank or the relief valve
  • Rusty or discoloured hot water
  • Rumbling or banging from the tank
  • The pilot light keeps going out on a gas unit

When you may not need a new system

  • A faulty part on a tank in good condition? A thermostat, element, valve or pilot assembly is usually far cheaper than a new unit.
  • A leaking tank? That one can’t be repaired. Replacing it is the better value.
  • Not sure? We test it first and tell you straight which makes sense.

Electric or gas: which suits you?

There’s no single right answer. We look at your household, what you have now, where the system sits and what it costs to run.

Electric storage

Usually the lowest upfront cost and simple to replace like for like, but often the most expensive to run.

Gas continuous flow

Heats water as you use it, so it doesn’t run out mid-shower. A good fit for bigger households with mains gas.

Gas storage

Recovers quickly and suits homes that use a lot of hot water at once.

We install the leading brands, including Rheem, Rinnai and Aquamax. If it suits your budget, we recommend a stainless steel tank, with no glass-lined steel inside to rust. Read our Rheem vs Rinnai guide.

Make your system last longer

  • Lift the relief valve lever gently every six months to check it’s working (check your manual first).
  • Have the sacrificial anode checked every few years. It protects the tank from rusting through.
  • Watch for early warning signs: rusty water, a damp floor around the tank or popping noises.
