Winter Plumbing Problems in Sydney and How to Avoid Them

Quick answer: Winter in Sydney brings more hot water breakdowns, storm-related drain overflows and gas heater issues. Get old hot water systems checked and gas heaters serviced before the cold sets in.

Sydney doesn’t get pipes freezing like Canberra does, but winter is still our busiest time of year for hot water breakdowns.

Hot water systems

Colder incoming water means your system works harder, and an old unit that was limping along through summer often gives up in June. If yours is over 10 years old, rusty at the base or the relief valve is pouring, get it checked before it fails on the coldest morning. More in my hot water guide.

Blocked drains after storms

Winter storms push water into cracked sewer and stormwater pipes. Root-damaged lines tend to overflow at the gully trap during heavy rain. Clear gutters and pits before the wet weather.

Gas heaters

If you’ve got gas heater bayonets, have the heater serviced and check for any smell of gas before you fire it up for the season. Any gas smell, turn it off and call a licensed gas fitter.

Exposed pipes

On the coldest nights in higher or inland areas, exposed pipes can get cold enough to stress old joints. Lagging exposed hot water pipes also cuts heat loss and saves you money.

Quick questions

Why does my hot water system fail in winter?

Colder incoming water makes the system work harder, and units that were already struggling often fail.

Should gas heaters be serviced?

Yes. Have them serviced regularly and check for any gas smell before using them for the season.
