One key decision homeowners face is choosing between copper pipes and PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) for water lines. While PEX has gained popularity for its lower upfront cost—often three times cheaper than copper—it’s worth considering why copper remains the tried-and-tested option for long-term durability and water quality. Copper has been used in plumbing for decades, and when installed correctly by experienced professionals, it can last over 100 years without degrading.

PEX pipes are made through a process called cross-linking, where polyethylene molecules are bonded to create a flexible, durable material. There are different methods: PEX-A uses peroxides (chemicals) added during extrusion and heated to form bonds; PEX-B relies on a silane (moisture-cure) process after extrusion; and PEX-C employs electron beam radiation to cross-link the material. 44 These techniques aim to make PEX resistant to high temperatures and pressure, but they can introduce concerns about chemical leaching into the water.

Research from the University of Helsinki highlights how plastic pipes like PEX can leach nutrients that promote bacterial growth in water systems. 20 The study examined how pipe materials affect bacterial communities and found that nutrients from plastics may enhance biofilm formation, potentially impacting water quality. 28 Additionally, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as tert-butyl alcohol can migrate from PEX into drinking water, especially in the early months after installation, leading to off-tastes or odors. 23 Chlorine, commonly used in water treatment, can interact with PEX, causing a noticeable chlorine taste or smell that some users report. 33 While this often fades over time, it’s a reminder that cheaper materials don’t always deliver the best results.

We recently completed a job in Sydney’s Lower North Shore, specifically in the Ryde district, where we replaced failing PEX lines in a home. The client had been experiencing constant chlorine and chemical tastes in their water, along with poor performance from the pipes. The original builder had opted for the more affordable PEX option, but it didn’t hold up—leading to leaks and contamination issues. After switching to copper, the problems disappeared entirely. The homeowner wished they’d gone with copper from the start, as it provided clean, fresh-tasting water without any lingering odors.

Copper avoids these leaching risks because it’s a natural metal that doesn’t break down like plastics can. 30 It’s resistant to corrosion when properly installed and doesn’t foster bacterial growth in the same way. For connections, we recommend welding (soldering) copper joints wherever possible, as it creates a permanent, leak-proof seal. In contrast, PEX often uses press fittings with rubber O-rings, which can degrade and fail after about 20 years, leading to costly repairs down the line.

At GT Plumbing, we prioritize what’s best for your home and health. Copper might cost more initially, but its longevity and reliability offer true value—saving you from emergencies and ensuring peace of mind.
